In a move to facilitate taxpayers and ensure a smooth closure of the fiscal year, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a directive for all Income Tax offices across India to remain open from March 29 to March 31, 2025. This decision includes Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Monday, which may coincide with the observance of Eid-al-Fitr.
The financial year 2024-25 concludes on March 31, 2025, a Monday, which is typically a closed holiday. Additionally, March 29 and 30 are a Saturday and Sunday, respectively. To ensure that all pending tax-related tasks and departmental work are completed before the fiscal year ends, the CBDT has taken this proactive measure under Section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Facilitating Taxpayers: The extension of working hours is primarily aimed at helping taxpayers complete any outstanding tax-related activities. This includes filing updated Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2023-24, which have a deadline of March 31, 2025.
Government Payments and Settlements: All government payments and settlements must be finalized by March 31 to ensure they are accounted for within the current financial year. This is crucial for maintaining fiscal discipline and ensuring that financial records are up to date.
The decision to keep Income Tax offices open benefits taxpayers in several ways:
In a complementary move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also instructed banks involved in government business to remain open on March 31, 2025. This ensures that transactions related to government payments and receipts can be processed efficiently. Additionally, the RBI has arranged for special clearing operations across the country to facilitate these financial activities within the current fiscal year.
Starting from April 1, 2025, several changes to the taxation framework announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 will come into effect. These changes are expected to impact taxpayers and businesses alike, making it even more imperative for individuals and companies to finalize their tax affairs by the end of March 2025.
The decision to keep Income Tax offices open on March 29-31 is a significant step by the CBDT to support taxpayers and ensure a smooth transition into the new fiscal year. By providing extra days for tax compliance, the government is ensuring that taxpayers have sufficient time to meet all regulatory requirements without facing penalties or complications.
