As the deadline approaches, millions of Americans could still be eligible to receive a $1,400 stimulus check, part of the Recovery Rebate Credit for missing pandemic-era stimulus payments. However, to claim this critical financial support, eligible individuals must act quickly, as the deadline to file 2021 tax returns is fast approaching.
The Recovery Rebate Credit is designed for individuals who did not receive one or more of the Economic Impact Payments (EIPs), commonly referred to as stimulus checks. These payments were part of the federal government's efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you were eligible for these stimulus payments but did not receive them or received less than the full amount, you can claim this credit when you file your tax returns.
To qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
If you are unsure whether you claimed this credit on your 2021 tax return, you can:
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set an important deadline for claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit: April 15, 2025. If you did not file your 2021 tax return, you must file and claim this credit by this date to receive the maximum amount of up to $1,400 per person.
In addition to the Recovery Rebate Credit, there are more than $1 billion in unclaimed tax refunds from the 2021 tax year. The median refund amount is approximately $781. To claim these refunds, you must file your 2021 tax return by the April 15, 2025 deadline. After this date, unclaimed refunds become property of the U.S. Treasury.
Eligible taxpayers will receive payments through direct deposit or by paper check. The IRS will also send a notification letter once the payment is processed.
The IRS estimates that these payments will total approximately $2.4 billion, with millions of Americans potentially benefiting from this financial relief.
As the deadline approaches, acting swiftly to ensure eligibility for these stimulus checks could provide much-needed financial support to families across the country.
