In a significant milestone for India's burgeoning semiconductor industry, Chennai-based Mindgrove Technologies is set to launch the country's first indigenously designed commercial microcontroller within the next six to seven months. This development marks a crucial step towards reducing India's dependency on imported semiconductor components and enhancing its presence in the global tech arena.
Mindgrove Technologies, a fabless semiconductor design startup, was founded in 2021. The company has been working tirelessly to bridge the gap in the embedded systems market by offering cost-effective yet high-performance chips. Their Secure IoT chip, designed using the RISC-V architecture, is aimed at various applications, including:
The Secure IoT chip is not only innovative but also more cost-efficient, priced about 30% lower than similar chips available in the market. This cost-effectiveness is expected to significantly benefit Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) by integrating an Indian SoC into their products without compromising on performance.
While the Secure IoT chip has already been launched in a limited capacity, Mindgrove Technologies is gearing up for commercial production. However, due to the lack of domestic semiconductor fabrication facilities, the prototyping and manufacturing of these chips are being outsourced to foundries abroad. This process involves substantial costs, as booking a production slot in a foundry can range up to $100,000. Despite these challenges, Mindgrove has secured $8 million in Series A funding to support its production efforts.
In addition to the Secure IoT chip, Mindgrove is also working on its Vision SoC chip, designed for high-performance edge computing and video processing applications. This chip will be ideal for devices like CCTV cameras, dashcams, smart TVs, and automotive ADAS systems. Prototyping for the Vision SoC is expected to begin soon, with production slated for mid-2026.
The launch of the first made-in-India microcontroller is part of a broader strategy by the Indian government to boost domestic semiconductor production. This includes several initiatives:
With Mindgrove Technologies set to launch its Secure IoT chip by September-October this year, India is poised to make a significant dent in the global semiconductor landscape. As the country continues to invest in technology and talent development, the future looks promising for India's rapidly evolving semiconductor industry.
