The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has taken a significant step toward modernizing maritime infrastructure with the announced installation of a new electric ship-to-shore (STS) crane at the Red Hook Container Terminal's Pier 10. This development is part of a broader initiative to transform the Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a vibrant, modern maritime port and mixed-use community. The project aligns with the city's vision for a "Harbor of the Future," emphasizing sustainability and efficiency in port operations.
The new electric STS crane, valued at $15 million, will replace four outdated, non-operational cranes across Piers 9A and 10. Liebherr USA has been contracted to deliver the crane, which will be designed, manufactured, and delivered by Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. in Ireland. The crane is expected to be operational by Spring 2027, marking a major upgrade for the Red Hook Container Terminal, enhancing its ability to handle cargo more efficiently and sustainably.
In addition to the new crane, Pier 10 will undergo significant repairs and upgrades. These include fender, fender pile, chock, and wale repairs and replacements, with an allocation of $2 million. The objective is to maintain the structural integrity of the pier against potential vessel damage, ensuring a safe and reliable berthing environment for ships and barges. These repairs are slated to be completed between May and September 2025.
The removal of the four non-operational cranes is a critical phase of the redevelopment plan. Two cranes on Pier 9A are over 50 years old and diesel-operated but are currently inaccessible due to the unstable condition of the pier. The other two on Pier 10 were damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Atlantic Coast Dismantling (ACD) will handle the demolition, which is scheduled to occur from April to August 2025. The steel from these dismantled cranes will be recycled, contributing to environmental sustainability.
The Brooklyn Marine Terminal project is part of a broader vision to revitalize the Red Hook and Columbia Street Waterfront Districts. The area is set to become a modern mixed-use community with a thriving maritime port at its heart. This transformation aims to create thousands of jobs and generate significant economic growth for the region.
The finalization of a comprehensive Vision Plan is imminent, marking a crucial step toward realizing the full potential of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal. This plan will outline further investments and strategic steps for the site's transformation, ensuring that the redevelopment aligns with both local needs and citywide economic goals.
The installation of a new electric STS crane at Red Hook Container Terminal's Pier 10 highlights NYCEDC's commitment to modernizing and enhancing the efficiency of New York City's maritime infrastructure. As the city moves toward creating a "Harbor of the Future," focusing on sustainability and economic growth, this project sets a precedence for similar developments across the region. With its emphasis on green technology and community-driven development, this initiative promises to be a pivotal moment in New York City's economic and environmental trajectory.
