Information Technology
In a groundbreaking move to enhance operational efficiency and safety, Casper, Phillips & Associates Inc. (CP&A) has developed an innovative Site Wind Analysis and Monitor (SWAM) programme for Global Container Terminals (GCT) at Deltaport, Canada. This pioneering system is not only improving container handling but also setting new standards in the maritime industry by integrating advanced weather forecasting and real-time wind monitoring.
GCT Deltaport, located at Roberts Bank in Delta, British Columbia, is one of Canada's largest and most advanced container terminals. Spanning over 210 acres, the facility boasts a 3,609-foot contiguous berth and a dock rail with 27,350 feet of tracks. At any given time, it accommodates more than 18,000 containers, making it a crucial hub for international trade. However, the terminal's exposure to Pacific Ocean winds via the Strait of Juan de Fuca posed significant challenges, necessitating a refined approach to managing operational risks.
Before the implementation of the SWAM programme, GCT faced frequent unplanned shutdowns due to wind-related hazards. These disruptions affected not only the terminal's efficiency but also compromised safety and customer satisfaction. The situation was exacerbated by the lack of clear guidelines on wind management, leading CP&A to intervene and develop a customized solution.
Key Challenges Addressed:
To overcome these challenges, CP&A designed the SWAM programme, leveraging a combination of technology and engineering expertise:
Components of SWAM:
The implementation of the SWAM programme involved close collaboration between CP&A and GCT. CP&A focused on back-end programming, incorporating complex engineering analysis and mathematics, while GCT led the front-end development, including user interface design and display graphics.
Trial Period and Results: During the trial phase, the new system was compared against the existing wind policy to ensure accuracy and effectiveness. The results showed significant improvements in predicting wind hazards and reducing unplanned shutdowns.
Looking forward, CP&A plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into the SWAM programme. This enhancement will further optimize the system's predictive capabilities, allowing for more precise wind speed calculations and better data-driven decision-making.
The SWAM programme has been recognized for its innovative approach to operational safety and efficiency, earning a nomination for an Innovation in Safety Award sponsored by the TT Club. This recognition highlights the potential for such technology to transform operations across the maritime sector.
The SWAM programme represents a shift from reactive to proactive management of wind-related risks:
Key Benefits:
CP&A's SWAM programme is setting a new standard in maritime operations by leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship. As the global maritime industry continues to evolve, innovations like the SWAM programme will play a crucial role in shaping more resilient and sustainable practices. With its potential to integrate AI and machine learning, the future of wind management at container terminals looks promising, promising further improvements in operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
By embracing such innovative solutions, terminals like GCT Deltaport are not only improving their internal operations but also contributing to a more robust and reliable global supply chain. The emphasis on proactive wind management underscores the importance of integrating technology into traditional operational frameworks, highlighting a future where maritime operations are safer, more efficient, and environmentally conscious.
