In a significant move to enforce noise regulations and protect residential peace, South Gloucestershire Council has successfully prosecuted Lidl supermarket for violating planning conditions related to delivery times. The prominent retail store admitted to receiving deliveries outside the stipulated hours, leading to disturbances among nearby residents.
The issue first surfaced in May 2024 when South Gloucestershire Council's planning enforcement team received a complaint about late-night and early-morning deliveries at the Lidl store on Halls Road in Kingswood. Despite initial warnings from council officers to adhere to the conditioned hours, the supermarket continued to receive deliveries at anti-social hours, prompting further action.
Lidl appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court on March 17, 2025, where they pleaded guilty to breaching the planning conditions. The court imposed a fine of £14,500, along with a £2,000 victim surcharge and an additional £973.66 to cover the council's costs. The total penalty amounts to £17,473.66.
Cllr Sean Rhodes, the cabinet member responsible for environmental enforcement at South Gloucestershire Council, welcomed the outcome. He emphasized that the conditions are vital for maintaining a peaceful environment for nearby residents and pledged that the council would continue to take enforcement action against such breaches.
A Lidl spokesperson expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured that measures would be implemented to prevent future violations. The company remains committed to minimizing disruptions while ensuring its stores are fully stocked for customers.
