The Inter-College Skills Show brought together hundreds of students, educators, employers, and industry leaders across five locations in London and Essex to demonstrate the power of vocational training in bridging the skills gap.
On 26th March, this groundbreaking event captivated the industry with its scale, featuring ten different competitions focused on key sectors such as construction, engineering, hospitality, healthcare, science, and digital industries. The competition was endorsed by WorldSkills UK, a leading organization in vocational skills development, emphasizing the importance of competition-based learning to prepare the workforce of tomorrow.
The Inter-College Skills Show was devised by Barking & Dagenham College in collaboration with other colleges to tackle London's persistent skills gap. The initiative aimed to showcase the critical role of further education in equipping learners with industry-relevant expertise.
A recent survey by the British Chambers of Commerce and the Open University revealed that 63% of businesses in London and the South East face a shortage of qualified workers. This shortage is largely due to inadequate employer-provided training and a mismatch between the skills demanded by businesses and those possessed by the workforce.
Colleges play a vital role in addressing this issue through initiatives like the Greater London Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP). This employer-led initiative, funded by the Department for Education and led by BusinessLDN, aims to ensure that London employers can find the skills they need.
