In the realm of modern warfare, especially in high-altitude terrains like the Siachen Glacier and Eastern Ladakh, India's military has faced challenges that have necessitated the development of indigenous combat solutions. The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has successfully addressed this need with the Prachand LCH (Light Combat Helicopter), a game-changing attack helicopter that is revolutionizing high-altitude warfare with unparalleled capabilities.
The Prachand LCH, meaning 'Intense' in Sanskrit, is India's first indigenously designed and manufactured multi-role light attack helicopter, specifically tailored for high-altitude combat operations. It was formally inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 3 October 2022, marking a significant milestone in India's defence self-reliance. Developed from the existing HAL Dhruv platform, the LCH is designed to excel in a variety of missions, including counterinsurgency, air defence suppression, and armoured warfare.
The development of the LCH Prachand was directly influenced by the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. During this conflict, India faced significant challenges in engaging enemy positions at high altitudes, as its existing Russian-origin attack helicopters (Mi-25 and Mi-35) were not suitable for such operations. The use of modified Mi-17 helicopters with rocket pods proved inadequate, underscoring the urgent need for an indigenous solution capable of operating effectively in high-altitude theaters.
The Prachand LCH boasts a narrow fuselage, stealth profiling, and armour protection, enhancing its survivability in combat scenarios. The tandem seating cockpit design allows seamless operations for the pilot and co-pilot, similar to other advanced attack helicopters like the Apache AH-64. Its low Radar Cross Section (RCS), thanks to features like canted flat panels, makes it less detectable, providing a tactical advantage.
The LCH features a glass cockpit with integrated avionics, a Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS) for target acquisition, and a Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) system. It is equipped with a Radar Warning Receiver, Missile Approach Warning System, and Laser Warning System, ensuring enhanced survivability in hostile environments. These advanced systems allow for efficient day and night operations, making it a formidable force in various combat scenarios.
The Prachand LCH is powered by twin HAL-Turbomeca Shakti 1H1 turboshaft engines, co-developed with France's Safran. These engines have been extensively tested for high-altitude performance, enabling the LCH to operate at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), a capability unmatched by any other attack helicopter globally. It achieves a maximum speed of approximately 280 km/h (170 mph) and has a range of about 700 km (435 miles) with a full weapons payload.
The LCH is equipped with a 20 mm nose-mounted cannon, a 70 mm rocket system, Helina (Dhruvastra) anti-tank guided missiles, and Mistral 2 air-to-air missiles. Its modular design allows customization of weapons based on operational needs, including machine guns, additional rocket pods, and guided missile systems. This versatility makes it highly adaptable to various combat scenarios, enhancing its effectiveness in different missions.
Recently, India approved one of its largest-ever defence deals worth Rs 62,000 crore for 156 LCHs from HAL. Of these, 90 helicopters will be deployed with the Indian Army, while 66 will strengthen the IAF. This procurement will not only bolster India's high-altitude warfare capabilities but also significantly boost the country's aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, creating new employment opportunities.
