In a significant move towards sustainable shipping, DNV has awarded the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a new ammonia-ready Kamsarmax bulk carrier design. This milestone was announced during Singapore Maritime Week 2025, highlighting the industry's shift towards green technologies. The approval represents a crucial step in advancing ammonia as a viable marine fuel, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.
The newly designed vessel is optimized with a length of 229 meters and a beam of 38 meters, ensuring increased cargo volume without compromising its draft. This design not only enhances efficiency but also includes a reinforced hull and reserved space for ammonia tanks and systems, facilitating future retrofits. Additionally, the vessel is compatible with a Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), further enhancing its fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
Here are some key specifications and features of the design:
Green ammonia is gaining traction as a sustainable marine fuel due to its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions when produced from renewable energy sources. In 2024, the first orders for ammonia-fueled non-gas carrier vessels were placed, primarily in the bulk carrier segment, indicating growing acceptance of ammonia in the industry.
DNV has been proactive in establishing a regulatory framework for ammonia-fueled vessels. The first edition of its classification rules for ammonia was published in 2021, with subsequent updates in 2022 and 2023. These updates include the Gas Fuelled Ammonia class notation, which outlines requirements for fuel systems and bunkering connections.
The collaboration between MARIC and DNV underscores their commitment to advancing green shipping technologies. As noted by Jianzhang Zhu, Vice President of MARIC, this partnership is crucial for overcoming technical and operational challenges associated with ammonia as a marine fuel. Øyvind Pettersen, Head of Technical Centre China at DNV Maritime, emphasized the need for innovation and a strong focus on safety to realize the full potential of ammonia in shipping.
The AiP serves as an independent assessment, confirming that the design is feasible and poses no significant technical barriers. DNV's recent white paper, "Safe Introduction of Alternative Fuels – Focus on Ammonia and Hydrogen as Ship Fuels," provides valuable insights for shipowners navigating the evolving regulatory landscape and implementing these alternative fuels.
The approval of MARIC's ammonia-ready Kamsarmax bulk carrier design by DNV marks a significant step towards a low-carbon future in shipping. As the industry moves forward, the integration of green fuels like ammonia will play a crucial role in meeting stringent greenhouse gas reduction targets. With ongoing technological advancements and strategic collaborations, sustainable shipping solutions are becoming more viable, paving the way for a cleaner and more efficient maritime sector.
